Health in Pregnancy Grant
Information for Healthcare Professionals
Almost every pregnant woman is entitled to a Health in Pregnancy Grant (HiPG), administered by HM Revenue and Customs. HiPG is a payment available to pregnant women between the 25th week of pregnancy and their expected date of delivery. Payment of the grant does not depend on household income.
It's a tax-free payment of £190, paid directly to the pregnant woman with the aim of providing financial help to:
- support her general health and well-being in the last few months of pregnancy
- meet the wider costs in the run-up to the birth
A midwife or doctor is required to sign the claim form, and so has a key role in ensuring women have the opportunity to access the grant. Forms are supplied to registered midwives and doctors. However, other healthcare professionals, such as health visitors and nurses, may well be asked questions about the grant, so it is important that all healthcare professionals understand how it works.
The healthcare professional resources and updates on the grant are available via this webpage. This includes information on how the grant can be claimed, as well as how to respond to questions that pregnant women might ask about the grant.
If you are a mum-to-be, more information on the grant is now available at
